Between .Com And A Hard Place

So you’re gonna jump in and get a name (commonly known as url or domain name)  for yourself.

Ok. How to explain value. Imagine the big guys what do you think they would purchase?  Coke? McDonalds? Facebook? Twitter? Youtube? DING DING! That’s right! They would buy all the ones with their names in them. Well how can you afford that? Plus all the misspellings? Plus keywords? What if they are gone?

So many to choose from. .ca .com .net .org .mobi .me .us .whichone? Try everything in your power to get a .com at the end of your name first and foremost. I know I know, you may ask why…

I want you to type in at the top of the tool bar : Coke (no extention), Twitter (no extention) Youtube (no extention). Press enter. What did you discover?

The toolbar automatically adds .com to the name. Automatically? Automatically! Wow Hey? This is the biggest reason why you want .com FIRST before any other extension.

Get the point – Text

Picture 3

Did you know that Arial text is the easiest text to read online?

Readability is Crazy Important!!!!! (spelling mistake on purpose)

Arial font has 40% higher readability online. What this means is that it is easier to read for a long period of time.

If your customers are reading your blog posts having text that is easy on the eyes means that they will stay on your blog longer. You WANT to make sure that after your peeps who read your posts don’t head over to the local eyeglass shop for new goggles. They will love you for it and not realize even why.

As an example.. I was surfing a few days ago and OMG!!! The yellow in the background was SO BRIGHT I almost fell over my chair. This color was so intense I almost hit the back button. Ontop of that the text was so hard to read that I copied the text and pasted into an editor just to read the content. The sad thing was the blog posts had such great content and it was “over shadowed” by the canary yellow crossed with blown up baby chicken scratch that I felt blinded!

Don’t make the same mistake for the sake of “design” elements that look “pretty”. Designs are about the end user. Your customers.

Showdown in the Wild Wild Web

Picture 5It’s Highnoon. The showdown begins, Who will be left standing?

The comparison between websites and blogs are about to begin. The movement in the boom-town of the internet has paths leading in different directions. People are arriving by foot, horseback, train and carriage. There are many who are trying to civilize the online community. The wildness and the unknown of this settlement excites us and scares us.

BANG! Bullets of text fly in different directions and you hope you don’t get caught in the cross fire.

All you know when you venture in is that you want to create a viable business and people to find you. Where do you start? What size will your website or blog business be? Are you settling into the right town where the gold rush WILL be or are you moving into a ghost town where people are leaving in droves? Where do you start?

You bravely moved into the new town and looking to set up shop. You have your wares in place and  you have a service. Now you just need a place and a name. Gosh where do you start? .com  .org  .net  .ws? Which one? A tiny little place? Something glamorous?  You just want to open your doors and get started so your customers can get to know you.

A tiny little shack on the outside of town where people are entering so you can snag the first new people? Or do you want to be where the action is and the competition is to get the attention of the people? How do you get peoples attention when they don’t know you and are distrustful of strangers? So much going on that you can get lost in the shuffle.

The Google sheriff demands different rules and you have to play along. He rewards those who keep their businesses legit and try not to cheat. Overall the Sheriff Google likes business that serve their customers. He is always on the lookout of the cheaters and wants to boot them out of town.

The answer? You create a way for people to know you. How do you do that? By laying your cards on the table and showing them who you are.

Traditional websites are great when you have a strength in your business, you are popular and you have something to share. There are different purposes of websites. I believe the internet movement will move to a blog. The reason I say this is communication is a two way street. People want to interact with each other. We want to communicate. The example of this is Facebook, Youtube, Twitter. Social networking is never going to go away.

As an information and sales tool, blogs allow for interaction both with you and your customer. Blogs can be used as a static explanation of your business OR if you want to get your hands dirty and get into the action you can partake in the building of your business. Blogs allow people to interact with you and help the town flourish with you in it. You will become part of the larger community and watch the fly by nights sneak off into the distance.

Once the dust settles people will know you, like you and trust you because you have been there and have seen the action and have known how to remain stable while the swirl of change has settled.

Be in the town where the water flows, the train brings in more people, where the people settlin’ in!

White Hat vs Black Hat SEO

White Hat and Black Hat are not about style nor old western movies.

It is about legitimacy.

White Hat = Good blog & website building practices

Black Hat =  Bad blog & website building practices.

White Hat SEO: One of the best SEO ways is to craft your blog or website for long term results and making Google happy. Basic rules apply when creating a blog or website. Find out what your customers want and give it to them. Isn’t that what you do in your business and isn’t that what Google always aims to do?. It is about serving the customer and then yourself. Keep it clean and make it simple. Always improve. This is what White Hat is about.

Black Hat SEO: The black hat practices like spamdexing are not in your best interests and partaking in anything that deviates from being good to Google is a practice that I do NOT recommend. What some developers do is set their websites to take hostage of you or manipulate your computer to do what they want. Websites that rely on black hat practices to get their sites highly ranked require trickery and constantly being slapped by Google and other search engines that uses  algorithms to  launch their results. By trying to beat the system with Black Hat practices can work short term but Google will slap you if they think that you are trying to cheat people and do the wrong thing PLUS black hat websites eventually get banned.

Google rewards you by having a blog or a website that helps your customers with pertinent information that they are looking for. This can be as simple as telling people how you can help them. How you are different. Why you love your business. How the Shuswap is part of your life. How you involve yourself in your community. What you do for fun. How customers can protect themselves . Your ideas can be infinite. If you can keep your customers in mind when you blog or create your website and how you can serve them… your business online and off will fly.

Let me fit you for your white hat before you start dueling with your computer and send it to boothill.

Shoot me an email and I will help you get your business to become a wrangler of the web.
